To Home-School, or Not to Home-School??
My work has taught me so many things, but most of all that mainstream school is not for everyone. One size does not fit all and there are many reasons parents choose a less conventional path to education.
Before deciding if homeschooling is a route you want to go down, you need to carefully consider the pros and cons. If you have a child that hates school and is reluctant to go, homeschooling allows your child to learn in a familiar and friendly environment. You will also be able to determine the curriculum you follow and work to your own flexible schedule, adapting your teaching methods to suit your child.
Some parents choose homeschooling to shelter their children from school violence, drugs and gang related crime. Or because their child has a special talent that needs nurturing.
More and more since the COVID-19 outbreak are we are seeing children that cannot cope with the anxieties that the school day brings them and sometimes parents feel the only option is to home school whilst their child repairs and rebalances. There is no doubt that strong bonds can be forged if your child is willing to embrace learning from home.
Sadly, there are drawbacks to homeschooling. Not all parents have the flexibility to be able to dedicate sufficient time and resources to a homeschooling schedule. It does take a lot of planning, resources and discipline. Children can also feel that they are missing milestone events such as residential trips, proms and the general day-to-day gossip of peers and relationships.
That said, when done properly, home-schooling can have huge benefits for both the child and the parent. No-one knows a child better than a parent and we sometimes have to bite the bullet and go with our gut instincts.
