Cosy Learning This Winter
January and February—the frosty, grey months when it feels like winter will never end.
The winds howl, the skies remain stubbornly cloudy, and sometimes, it seems like we’ll never see that orange ball in the sky again! Fear not, fellow winter warriors, because I’ve got a handful of tips to help you stay warm and keep cosy learning during this chilly season. Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way—no one wants to be caught shivering through an extra-cold spell! So, let’s dive into some practical and even fun ways to outwit the cold.
Layer Up
When it comes to staying warm, layering is your best friend. Start with thermal base layers—think long-sleeve tops and leggings that hug your body and trap heat. Next, add cosy insulating layers like woolly jumpers or fleece jackets. If you have to venture outside (whether you like it or not!), top it off with a water- and windproof outer layer to protect against that biting chill. Don’t forget accessories like scarves, hats, gloves, and thick thermal socks! Layering is not just about piling on clothes—it’s about choosing materials that work together to trap heat effectively, whether you’re heading outdoors or enjoying some cosy learning at home.
Make the Most of Your Heating
I learned this one the hard way last winter when my heating broke for an entire week—it was like living in a freezer! Not having hot water or heat is no joke. So, make sure your heating system is in tip-top shape before the cold sets in. If you have central heating, consider investing in a programmable thermostat: it’ll warm your home in advance so you’re not shivering as soon as you walk in the door. And remember, draught excluders and thermal curtains are your best friends when it comes to keeping heat trapped inside. Did you know that simply closing your doors can help maintain the warmth in smaller areas of your home? It’s a simple trick, but it’s surprisingly effective. If you are struggling with the finances of keeping your home heated, you can find help here.
Hot Drinks and Comfort Food (Not Just for Winter!)
Nothing beats the chill like a hot mug of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. But why stop there? Soups, stews, and hearty casseroles are your winter must-haves, filling you up while warming your insides. Regular meals are key to keeping your body at the perfect temperature—so don’t skip breakfast (even if it’s tempting!), especially when fuelling up for cosy learning sessions! For an added treat, try spicing up your meals with ingredients like ginger or cinnamon. These spices not only taste great but are also known for their warming properties. And don’t underestimate the power of snacks like roasted nuts or dried fruit—they’re easy to prepare and can give your body an extra energy boost to fend off the cold.
Keep Active, Keep Warm
One of the best ways to stay warm is to keep moving. A little indoor yoga, stretching, or dancing to your favourite playlist will do wonders for your circulation—and your mood! If you’re more of an outdoor person like me, take advantage of dry days to go for a walk, run, or bike ride. Trust me, the more you move, the warmer you’ll feel! And if you’re lucky enough to have dogs (like I do), there’s no excuse not to get outside for a daily walk. For those who work from home or have desk jobs, setting an alarm to get up and move every hour can make a big difference—an energising break before you return to your cosy learning environment. Even simple exercises like marching in place or doing a few jumping jacks can get your blood flowing and help you feel warmer.
Heat Pads and Electric Blankets
For those cold, crisp nights, an electric blanket or heated pad is a game changer. Whether it’s draped over your bed or wrapped around you while you indulge in your favourite shows, nothing compares to the warm, toasty feeling. My daughter swears by her heat pad—and so do our two cats, who have made it their official napping spot. Just remember to follow the safety guidelines and avoid overheating. For those who prefer a more low-tech solution, microwavable heat packs filled with rice or wheat can be just as effective. These are especially useful for targeting specific areas like your hands or feet, which can often feel the cold the most.
Winter Accessories: More Than Just a Fashion Statement
When you’re outdoors, make sure you’re rocking those winter accessories. Woolly hats, thermal gloves, and scarves not only keep you stylish but also act as crucial shields against the cold. Don’t skimp on boots! A good pair of insulated, waterproof boots will keep your feet nice and toasty while keeping puddles and snow at bay. Plus, you’ll look great! If you’re looking for extra warmth, consider layering a thin pair of gloves underneath a thicker, insulated pair. This trick works wonders on especially frigid days. And while fashion often favours shorter scarves, a long, thick scarf that you can wrap multiple times around your neck will always be a better choice for warmth.
Insulate Your Home
Did you know that a lot of heat can escape from a poorly insulated home? If you live in an older property (like me), you’ll definitely want to check for draughts around windows, doors, and chimneys. Foam strips or draught-proofing tape are easy, cost-effective ways to seal those gaps. Insulating your loft or attic is another great way to keep the warmth in. We re-insulated our loft last year, and let me tell you—the difference was noticeable! Don’t forget to check your windows for condensation or leaks. Double glazing is a worthwhile investment if your budget allows for it, as it can drastically reduce heat loss.
Cosy Up with Blankets and Throws
At home, make your living space the cosiest sanctuary imaginable. Fluffy blankets, throws, and cushions not only look inviting but also trap the heat while you’re snuggling on the sofa. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve fallen asleep wrapped in my blanket! For an added touch, invest in materials like faux fur or fleece—they’re not just warm but incredibly soft and luxurious. To create a truly inviting atmosphere for cosy learning or relaxing, consider adding a few scented candles or a soft rug to your living space. It’s all about creating a warm, inviting environment that makes you forget about the chill outside.
Warm Baths and Showers
There’s nothing quite like a warm bath or shower to melt away the chill after a long day. Add a few essential oils, bath salts, or bubbles, and you’ll soon feel human again. It’s the perfect way to relax and reset your body and mind for a restful night. To make the experience even cosier, warm your towels on a radiator or in a towel warmer before stepping out of the bath or shower. And for those who enjoy a bit of indulgence, adding a cup of herbal tea or a good book to your bath routine can turn it into a luxurious self-care session.
Stay Social and Stay Positive
Winter can feel extremely isolating, especially when the days are short and the weather’s dreary. But staying connected with friends and family can make all the difference. Whether it’s a hot drink with a friend, a weekend outing, or a movie night in, keeping your spirits up is just as important as staying physically warm—especially when balancing social time with cosy learning moments. Consider hosting a potluck dinner or a game night to bring people together—it’s a great way to beat the winter blues. And don’t forget about outdoor activities like ice skating or visiting holiday markets, which can turn even the coldest days into memorable experiences.
